Tension In The House: IGP’s Budget Presentation Triggers Fierce Lawmaker Dispute

Tempers flared when discrepancies emerged between the Inspector-General’s verbal presentation and the documents submitted to lawmakers. Attempts by the committee chairman to proceed while addressing the inconsistencies sparked resistance, escalating into a heated shouting match and culminating in a senator staging a dramatic walkout.

Once order was restored, Egbetokun resumed his presentation, urging the removal of the restrictive envelope budget system for the NPF.

“The envelope system hampers the Police Force’s ability to address the vast and complex national security challenges we face. A flexible, needs-based funding model is essential for effective operations,” the IGP emphasized.

While some lawmakers supported Egbetokun’s push for reform, others maintained that the current framework should remain in place. Senator Abdul Ningi defended the envelope system, calling it the “normative approach” and noting it was a tool, not a legislatively binding rule.

Other senators proposed exploring a transition to a needs-based budget, signaling a potential review of the police funding process.
