His jovial nature extended to the film show sessions he organized every evening, using a projector provided by Jesu Oyingbo. The neighborhood would gather for an evening of movies, creating a festive atmosphere.
Jesu Oyingbo’s narrative suggests that he amassed significant wealth during his ministry. However, he vehemently denied allegations that his wealth was acquired through extortion from his followers. Instead, he claimed to be a savior and a businessman, relying on his enterprises to manage both his ministry and polygamous family.
Between the early 1970s and late 80s, Jesu Oyingbo made a significant impact, shaking Lagos and other cities in southwestern Nigeria. His popularity even led to the inclusion of his name in a Yoruba gospel song.
In 1988, the self-proclaimed Jesus of Oyingbo passed away in a hospital at the age of 73, causing confusion among his followers. The question of how Jesus Christ could die on his second coming bewildered them. There was hope for a resurrection on the third day, but Jesu Oyingbo never returned.
His death marked the unraveling of his ministry, as the center could no longer hold. His elder children attempted to mend the cracks but ended up widening them.
Jesu Oyingbo left no will, sparking a fierce war among his children, wives, and followers. His eldest son, Olukayode Immanuel Odumosu, took the matter to court, leading to the exposure of atrocities within the communal enclave.
In 1997, the court ruled in favor of the children, resulting in the eviction of their father’s followers from the enclave.
