In a statement released on Saturday, the FCCPC explained that its decision was driven by evidence of anti-competitive practices among market groups. Bello accused food sellers and market organizations of engaging in price-fixing and obstructing fair pricing by independent sellers to manipulate market prices.

While acknowledging that factors like the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange fluctuations have impacted food prices, the commission expressed concern over market associations’ role in exacerbating these issues.

“FCCPC values the feedback received on our recent directive to address price gouging, price fixing, and other exploitative practices. We understand the challenges posed by current economic conditions, including the removal of fuel subsidies and currency fluctuations,” the statement read.

“The directive is not an attempt to control prices or enforce arbitrary reductions. Instead, it aims to prevent exploitative behaviors, such as price gouging and market manipulation, as prohibited by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. Such practices distort the market and harm consumers.”

The FCCPC emphasized its commitment to maintaining a fair and accountable marketplace and pledged to work with businesses, consumer groups, and political leaders to address economic challenges while promoting fair competition.

Businesses are encouraged to comply with the law, and consumers are urged to report any instances of exploitative practices.
