“Fasten your seat belt” is a simple yet crucial safety instruction given in various modes of transportation to ensure passengers’ safety. It is a straightforward measure to prevent harm in case of unexpected stops, turbulence, or accidents, by securely restraining individuals in their seats.

While the concept of fastening a seat belt is universally understood, it serves as an apt metaphor for the challenges faced by the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his supporters as they navigate the return of the Obidient Pro Max movement.

The revival of the Obidient movement makes it clear that we need to take precautions to combat the spread of false information and baseless attacks on President Tinubu and his supporters. These precautions should be in place for the entirety of President Tinubu’s term. Many of you have likely seen Peter Obi’s recent news conference where he announced the resurgence of the Obidient movement.

The response of his running mate, Datti Ahmed, further highlights the gravity of the situation:

“The petition court and the supreme court, please quote me on this, did not actually affirm the success of Tinubu’s presidency. They upheld the unconstitutionality of that election, and they are happy for it to remain so, and they have the power; nobody can do anything about it. That is why we said it is an unreasonable show of force. If there was something we could do, we would stop it, but we are law-abiding citizens, that is why I am here sitting with you today and still complaining.”

This is where the challenge lies. Movements like the Obidient Pro Max, which vehemently oppose the current government and rely on false information and propaganda, can exacerbate political divisions, foster disinformation, hinder effective governance, erode public trust, spark social unrest, and normalize the use of propaganda.

While constructive opposition is vital for a healthy democracy, excessive use of propaganda and personal attacks can have detrimental consequences.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who has commenced his tenure on a promising note, must remain vigilant in neutralizing this ongoing wave of hostility. In addition to providing quality governance, Tinubu and his team must employ a comprehensive strategy to counteract the disinformation and propaganda campaign. This strategy should encompass the following steps:

Promote Media Literacy: Launch educational initiatives to empower the public with the skills to critically evaluate information sources and discern falsehoods from facts.

Fact-Checking: Collaborate with fact-checking organizations to independently verify claims and widely disseminate their findings.

Open Dialogue: Encourage constructive and policy-focused discussions that emphasize ideas and solutions rather than personal attacks.

Transparency: Ensure transparency in government operations and decision-making to provide accurate and verifiable information.

Strengthen Institutions: Bolster democratic institutions, including independent judiciaries, free media, and election monitoring bodies, to maintain checks and balances.

Civic Engagement: Promote active civic participation to ensure that the public’s voice is heard in the democratic process.

Counter False Narratives: Disseminate counter-narratives that present accurate information and challenge false claims through public education campaigns and media outreach.

Regulate Social Media: Explore measures to regulate social media platforms to curb the spread of false information while respecting freedom of speech and expression.

Accountability: Hold individuals who intentionally spread false information accountable through legal means when warranted.

Long-Term Education: Initiate and support long-term educational programs that teach critical thinking, digital literacy, and democratic values to the population from an early age.

By implementing these measures, President Tinubu and his team can effectively combat disinformation and propaganda, safeguard democratic processes, and cultivate an informed and engaged citizenry.

In doing so, they can help navigate the challenges presented by the return of the Obidient Pro Max movement and contribute to a healthier political and social landscape in Nigeria.
