Tinubu Administration Pledges Action On Niger Delta Oil Pollution And Gas Flaring
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government to address oil spills and gas flaring in the Niger Delta region. This commitment was made during the International Conference on Petroleum Pollution and Just Transition in the Niger Delta held in Abuja, as reported by Naija News.

The conference, titled “Advancing the Recommendations of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission (BSOEC),” was organized by the Ford Foundation, Social Action, and the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). Tinubu was represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who was in turn represented by Busari Kamoru, the Director of Upstream in the ministry. They emphasized the federal government’s commitment to reducing pollution and promoting sustainable environmental practices in light of the region’s rich resources.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri highlighted the severe damage inflicted by unregulated activities of international oil companies on the state’s rivers and soil. He referenced a report from the BSOEC titled “An Environmental Genocide,” which revealed alarming statistics, including the destruction of 40 percent of Bayelsa’s mangroves and the contamination of soil and water from toxic spills.

Governor Diri noted that oil pollution and gas flaring were linked to over 16,000 neonatal deaths in 2012 alone and urged global stakeholders to support the implementation of the report’s recommendations. Additionally, Senator Seriake Dickson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change and former governor of Bayelsa State, called for collective action to tackle environmental pollution effectively.
