House Of Reps Orders INEC To Vacate Local Government Secretariats Nationwide

This decision stems from concerns that the current arrangement puts INEC under the influence of council chairmen, especially in states where a single political party dominates. The order was made following the unanimous adoption of a motion titled “Urgent Need to Relocate INEC Local Government Offices to Neutral Venues,” sponsored by Prof. Paul Nnamchi, the representative for Enugu East/Isi-Uzo federal constituency.
Nnamchi argued that section 157 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees INEC’s autonomy and independence in conducting national elections. He emphasized that the proximity of INEC offices to local government headquarters could compromise its independence and expose it to undue interference from interest groups, particularly in areas controlled by a single political party. This situation, he noted, undermines the impartiality outlined in Section 6 of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
As the House considered the motion, Nnamchi stressed that relocating INEC offices is essential for maintaining public trust and confidence in the electoral process. The House urged INEC to include budgetary provisions in the 2025 budget for the relocation process. Additionally, it directed its Committee on Electoral Reforms to collaborate with INEC and other stakeholders to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.
