Obi emphasized that it’s still possible to terminate the Lagos-Calabar highway project, stressing the urgent national priorities of security, poverty alleviation, healthcare, and education, particularly for disadvantaged populations.

Expressing dismay, Obi described the ongoing demolition of businesses and residences within the project’s designated right-of-way as callous and distressing. He criticized the swift commencement of the project despite protests from affected business and property owners.

He lamented the devastating impact of the demolition, highlighting the loss of livelihoods, destruction of investments, and disappearance of jobs, particularly affecting vulnerable demographics such as the elderly and youth.

Obi warned of the imminent loss of thousands of jobs and investments worth over $200 million, with sectors like leisure and hospitality facing extinction. He emphasized that the economic losses observed so far primarily affect the initial kilometers in Lagos but warned of dire consequences along the entire 700 km stretch, especially in rural areas where affected individuals lack advocacy.

Questioning the rationale and timing of the project, Obi argued that Nigeria’s current economic challenges, including widespread poverty and insecurity, necessitate a reevaluation of priorities. He advocated for the redirection of resources towards essential needs such as infrastructure maintenance, security enhancement, and healthcare improvement.

Pointing to recent tragedies like the fuel tanker explosion on the East-West road in Rivers State, which claimed lives due to poor road conditions, Obi stressed the urgency of addressing existing infrastructure deficiencies before embarking on costly new projects.

He urged the government to prioritize national security, poverty reduction, healthcare, and education, asserting that it’s not too late to reconsider the Lagos-Calabar highway project.

In conclusion, Obi cautioned against further expensive abandoned projects, emphasizing the real and essential development needs of Nigeria over superficial initiatives.
