The inaugural session of the Senate in its newly renovated red chamber faced disruptions on Tuesday, April 30, as Senators engaged in verbal altercations over seating arrangements.
Following approximately two years of renovation work, both chambers of the National Assembly formally resumed legislative activities today.
During the renovation period, lawmakers utilized makeshift chambers in both wings of the National Assembly.
Upon reconvening in the refurbished chamber, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commenced proceedings by acknowledging Senators who celebrated birthdays during the recess. Tensions flared when Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u (APC, Zamfara North) stood up from his assigned seat to express discontent with the seating arrangement to Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central).
What began as a subdued conversation between Ya’u and Bamidele escalated into a heated exchange, triggering reactions from other Senators and resulting in a tumultuous session lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Senator Ya’u vocally protested the placement of his new seat, arguing that it did not befit his status as a senior Senator, having previously held a principal position as Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate during the 9th National Assembly.
The verbal dispute intensified as Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) also criticized the seating arrangement to Bamidele, particularly concerning the positioning of senior Senators.
In an effort to restore order, Senate President Akpabio intervened, urging Bamidele and the disgruntled Senators to approach him, which they did, ultimately allowing Akpabio to proceed with his welcome address after tensions subsided.
Following Akpabio’s remarks, Senate Leader Bamidele called for an emergency closed-door session, presumably to address the lingering discontent among Senators regarding the seating arrangement.
