Tinubu Announces Three Successes To Discourage Nationwide Protests

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined three major initiatives to dissuade Nigerians from participating in the planned August 1-10, 2024, protest. Tinubu urged protest organizers to refrain from escalating Nigeria’s situation and compared it to the instability seen in Sudan. He highlighted that his administration is revamping the social welfare system to better reach vulnerable communities at the ward level, ensuring support for the poor and needy.

He explained that the student loan scheme will assist with school fees and provide monetary support for education, while the consumer credit initiative will enable citizens to purchase cars and homes with flexible repayment options. Additionally, the new minimum wage has been increased by over 100 percent.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Assembly passed the new Minimum Wage Act, which raises the minimum wage to N70,000, following an agreement between Tinubu and Nigerian workers. Last week, the federal government began disbursing funds to 110,000 beneficiaries under its N35 billion student loan scheme. This follows the April approval of N100 billion in consumer credit by the Tinubu administration.
