The President was briefed extensively by the Ulamas at the presidential villa in Abuja. The delegation, led by Sheikh Bala Lau, provided insights following their recent visits to Niger Republic.

As stated by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, the Islamic leaders conveyed that the military junta exhibited a willingness to deepen dialogue with ECOWAS.

The Niger military council officials demonstrated a more detailed acceptance of the ECOWAS position, indicating steps to prevent armed conflict.

Responding to domestic and international ethnic tensions fueled by certain political figures, President Tinubu emphasized his dedication to a peaceful resolution, even amidst calls for swifter intervention.

He explained, “I am managing a very serious situation. If you take ECOWAS aside, other people will react, those who are outside of our control. I am the one holding those sides back. I am the one holding back ECOWAS.”

Regarding the urgency of the matter, the President highlighted, “Even as at this morning, I have been inundated with phone calls on the readiness of countries with their military force and contributions. However, I told them to wait. I am meeting with the Ulamas and I will get back to you.”

President Tinubu stressed that accountability must be demanded from the military junta for jeopardizing the people of Niger Republic.

He asserted, “They cannot use the gun given to them to protect the sovereignty of the country and turn it against the people of the country.”

Reaffirming ECOWAS’s commitment to peaceful resolution, the Chairman assured that the regional body will continue to diplomatically engage all stakeholders.

Responding to the Islamic scholars’ request for federal government oversight of palliative distribution, President Tinubu assured that additional assistance will be provided for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.

He also urged state governments to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution and management of the palliatives.
