Tinubu highlighted that his administration has introduced a wide-ranging youth development strategy, focusing on key sectors to support Nigeria’s economic transformation. He also paid tribute to the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and former Premier of Northern Nigeria, for his leadership and vision. The President noted that Bello’s philosophy of national progress, which emphasized the need for all regions to thrive together, continues to guide the country’s development.

Addressing the challenges facing Northern Nigeria, Tinubu pointed to the alarming statistic that Nigeria has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world, describing it as a pressing issue that must be urgently addressed. He stressed that such challenges should be viewed not with pride but as obstacles that must be overcome for the benefit of the nation.

Tinubu also outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering youth empowerment, including the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, the Presidential Initiative for Youth Enterprise Clusters, and initiatives in the digital and creative economy such as the Skill-Up Artisans Programme (SUPA) and the National Youth Talent Export Programme (NATEP). He also mentioned the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to improve access to higher education and the iDICE programme, designed to support digital entrepreneurship.

Further emphasizing the importance of agriculture, Tinubu stressed that investments in the sector would help solidify Northern Nigeria as the country’s agricultural hub. He also addressed security concerns in the region, outlining measures such as bolstering community policing and tackling cross-border issues like smuggling and insurgency.

Looking ahead, Tinubu pointed out that by 2050, Nigeria is expected to be the third-largest country in the world, with a significant proportion of its population under the age of 21. He emphasized the need for urgent action to build a stable and safe federation, and he called on young Nigerians to take an active role in shaping the nation’s future.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, also underscored the crucial role of youth education in national development. He stressed that the youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also of today, and called for ongoing dialogue between leaders and young people across the country. The Sultan added that investment in education should take precedence over other infrastructural developments, as it is the most enduring legacy a leader can leave behind.

The event, marking the 15th anniversary of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, was an opportunity to discuss and promote initiatives aimed at empowering young people in Northern Nigeria and beyond.
