Tinubu Government Responds To Obasanjo: Reflect On Your Presidential Failures In Your Final YearsIn a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, the federal government has responded sharply to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent criticisms. Onanuga’s statement catalogued various controversies and missteps during Obasanjo’s presidency, urging the former leader to temper his self-righteousness in public discussions about Nigeria’s challenges. The response came after Obasanjo lamented Nigeria’s economic situation during a keynote speech at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, where he blamed the government of President Tinubu and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, for the country’s problems.
The statement highlighted several controversial events from Obasanjo’s time in office, including the impeachment of state governors, his involvement in corruption scandals, and the failure to address critical issues like infrastructure and security. Onanuga pointed out that Obasanjo had criticized his successors for the very issues his administration had failed to resolve.
For instance, Obasanjo’s administration, according to the presidency, was marked by fiscal irresponsibility, such as paying off Nigeria’s $15 billion debt to the Paris Club, even though vital national infrastructure was left in disrepair. The statement also noted that despite Obasanjo’s claims of being an economic wizard, he failed to address key sectors like education, roads, and the military.
The presidency also recalled that Obasanjo’s government was marred by issues like the Halliburton bribery scandal and his public spat with his vice president, Atiku Abubakar, over the mismanagement of funds. Moreover, Obasanjo’s tenure witnessed rising insecurity, with the growth of militancy in the Niger Delta and the early stages of the Boko Haram insurgency.
The government emphasized that, under President Buhari and now under Tinubu, Nigeria has made significant investments in security, strengthening the military and making strides in combating insurgents and criminals.
In conclusion, the Tinubu administration urged Obasanjo to reflect on his own leadership record instead of continuing to offer unsolicited critiques. The presidency’s statement underscores the belief that Obasanjo’s time would be better spent reflecting on missed opportunities and the challenges he failed to resolve during his own tenure.
