This move comes amid escalating concerns for safety and security during the planned demonstrations.
Several lawmakers, who spoke anonymously to Daily Sun, expressed fears of becoming targets if the nationwide protests proceed. They referenced the violent incidents during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, where many were attacked and their properties vandalized in their constituencies.
One senator, who wished to remain unnamed, pointed out that lawmakers are more vulnerable compared to ministers, governors, and presidential aides, who are usually afforded greater security. He noted that lawmakers are more accessible to the public, making them potential targets in times of unrest.
The senator explained, “We were scheduled to adjourn for our annual break next week, but during a recent meeting, many lawmakers raised concerns about imminent threats to their lives if the protests go ahead. We requested that the adjournment be brought forward, and the leadership agreed to this.
“Lawmakers who cannot afford the necessary security are leaving until the situation stabilizes. Some of us are heading to Europe or America, while others are traveling to Ghana and South Africa. Diplomatic passport holders often get visa-on-arrival.
“I’ve booked my ticket and will be leaving Abuja this weekend. President Bola Tinubu and his ministers are well-protected, as are the governors. Unlike them, I have no protection if protesters decide to attack. It’s safer to leave until the situation calms down.”
A travel agent at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, confirmed to Daily Sun that she has been arranging emergency tickets for many National Assembly members over the past week, with destinations including Europe, the Middle East, and other African countries.
She noted that the surge in demand for international flight tickets has nearly doubled their cost.
The agent remarked, “The price of summer tickets has risen due to the sudden demand from government officials. Many senators and House of Representatives members are booking these tickets, and some ministers are also requesting flights, supposedly for medical reasons, though I doubt this.
“I recently booked a return ticket to the United States for a senator at nearly $3,000. South Africa and the United Kingdom are the most popular destinations among lawmakers, with others seeking tickets to Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and even Ghana.
“One senator joked that he was leaving Nigeria to ‘save his head,’ unsure how the protests would turn out. I could see the fear in his eyes. I booked a ticket to Turkey for him.”
