While legal experts, political stakeholders, and organizations like the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have criticized the move, some, including key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), have defended the President’s actions. The NBA and other legal analysts argue that Tinubu’s decision may be unconstitutional, warning that it threatens democratic principles and due process.
The PDP, through its spokespersons, has also strongly opposed the suspension, calling it an infringement on the constitutional rights of Rivers State residents. Similarly, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, denounced the move, describing it as a dangerous precedent that could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy.
However, some voices, such as APC chieftain Obidike Chukwuebuka, have commended Tinubu’s intervention. In a statement to Vanguard on Wednesday, Obidike praised the President, claiming that his actions prevented the impeachment of Governor Fubara.
According to Obidike, Fubara “owes a debt of gratitude” to Tinubu for stepping in to prevent further escalation of the crisis. He asserted that the President’s decision aligns with Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which grants him the power to declare a state of emergency during times of crisis. Obidike emphasized that such measures temporarily strip the Governor, Deputy Governor, and other state institutions of their authority, allowing the President to restore order.
While the specifics of the alleged impeachment plot against Fubara remain unclear, Tinubu’s intervention has undeniably shifted the political landscape in Rivers State.
The President’s commitment to peace and stability was further reflected in his recent meeting with Governor Fubara and other key stakeholders, where he underscored the need for unity and cooperation.
“As the situation continues to unfold, Governor Fubara’s political future remains closely tied to President Tinubu’s influence,” Obidike noted, warning that the outcome could significantly impact the state’s governance and political direction.
