SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the police command, confirmed the accident during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. She clarified that 11 passengers on the commercial boat lost their lives in the mishap, refuting speculations that the death toll was 20.

The incident took place on January 9 around 9:15 a.m., involving a local wooden boat powered by a single 25HP Yamaha engine, ferrying passengers from Ukwa community in Ngo town, Andoni Local Government Area, to Bonny Island. The boat sank as it approached Amariaria community in Finima town.

Acting on received information, SP Ogarachi Chima, the officer in charge of Marine, proceeded to the scene and confirmed the unfortunate loss of 11 passengers. The police have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the mishap.

Contrary to the initial statement by the Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council, who reported 20 casualties, the police spokesperson clarified that the accurate count was 11. The Chairman expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured that rescue efforts were underway, emphasizing the close monitoring of the situation to provide necessary medical assistance to survivors and recover the remains of the deceased from the sea.
