The Head of the Department of Media and Publicity of the fire department, Hassan Adekunle, conveyed this unfortunate incident in a statement released on Monday, January 15, in Ilorin.

According to Adekunle, the Kwara State Fire Service promptly responded to the fire at Megida Onikanhun Compound on January 15, at approximately 11:08 hours. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the entire compound and Edun Market engulfed in flames, attributing the extensive damage to a delayed notification.

To optimize firefighting operations, a portion of the fence was dismantled for improved access. An SMS message requesting additional manpower was sent to the Brigade Headquarters at 11:22 a.m., leading to the arrival of proficient firefighters who successfully brought the situation under control within an hour, ultimately extinguishing the fire.

Investigations revealed that an unidentified individual ignited a fire using refuse, inadvertently causing it to spread to the nearby compound, resulting in the widespread devastation.

While expressing condolences to Magaji Megida Onikanhun’s representative, Kuranga Adebayo, Mr. Adekunle acknowledged the commendable efforts of the fire service. However, he highlighted the unfortunate aftermath, noting that the incident had left over 120 occupants homeless, impacting 44 rooms and a mosque within the 75-room compound. Fortunately, no casualties were reported despite the significant property damage.
