Firefighters have been actively searching for survivors and successfully rescued a woman from the debris of the Dubrovnik Hotel, located in Villa Gesell, a coastal city approximately 350 km south of Buenos Aires.
The building crumbled during the early hours of October 29, according to local officials.
Reports indicate that among those trapped may be workers from a construction site that was allegedly operating without the necessary municipal permits at the Dubrovnik Hotel.
Firefighters managed to rescue an elderly woman alive from the wreckage, while an 80-year-old man was confirmed dead, as reported by local newspaper Pagina 12, citing Javier Alonso, the provincial security minister.
Alonso stated that there were no guests in the hotel at the time of the collapse; however, some workers were residing in another section of the building, which was originally constructed in 1986.
Over 300 firefighters, police, and rescue personnel have been deployed to the scene, engaging in a rescue operation that has been ongoing for more than eight hours. The city’s mayor, Gustavo Barrera, has warned that the adjacent building is also at risk of collapsing.
Local officials revealed that unauthorized construction work within the hotel was detected and halted back in August.
A prosecutor has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. The municipality of Villa Gesell stated in a press release that the hotel was undergoing renovations without the proper permits.
According to Infobae, Alonso mentioned that the courts have ordered the arrest of four individuals in connection with the hotel’s collapse.
