An eyewitness informed Daily Trust that six others were injured by gunfire when the military raided the homes of individuals involved in an altercation at the main checkpoint in Lere.
The deceased, who had completed his National Youth Service three months ago, was reportedly killed during the raid.
SP Ahmed Wakil, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday and noted that an investigation is underway.
The situation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Lere village and Operation Safe Haven personnel stationed in Tafawa Balewa.
“The Command responded promptly. Upon receiving the report, Commissioner Auwal Musa Mohammed deployed a Mobile Police Force unit for reinforcement and formed a team of experienced detectives to ensure a thorough investigation,” said the PPRO.
He added, “The officers involved will be identified and held accountable. The Commissioner of Police is committed to a comprehensive investigation using all necessary protocols and tools to ensure justice.”
Babawo Lauwawu, a survivor with bullet wounds, recounted, “On Tuesday evening, a curfew was imposed on Lere town starting at 10 pm. We complied and were indoors by 9 pm. However, we heard gunshots before the curfew time. I was shot in the leg. We followed their orders but didn’t understand the reason for the shooting.”
Another victim, Zaharedden Mohammed, reported that the District Head of Lere had directed the military to enforce the curfew. Mohammed explained that the conflict began when PDP supporters returning from a campaign had a minor altercation with the military, which escalated into the shooting.
“We were in the market area around 9 pm when we heard gunshots. Two people were injured. When we went to the Sarki’s palace, a local hunter working with the military aimed a rifle at my face and shot me, damaging one of my eyes,” Mohammed said.
Nurudden Isa, a driver involved in the misunderstanding, described how he was attacked by the military after a vehicle search led to a dispute. “When I arrived at the checkpoint, an officer questioned me and ordered a search of my vehicle. After resolving the misunderstanding, I was later attacked by the military at my home. They beat me in front of my family and shot into the air when my wife questioned them,” Isa added.
