This appeal comes in response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of a 14% tariff increase on Nigerian goods exported to the United States.

Speaker Abbas made the remarks on Friday while receiving a delegation from the China People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led by its Vice-Chairman, Mr. Hu Chunhua, in Abuja.

“In a time of evolving global trade dynamics and rising tariffs from major economies, Nigeria must move swiftly to diversify its trade partnerships. Deepening our bilateral ties with China offers significant opportunities in trade, investment, and technological advancement,” Abbas said in a statement posted on his handle.

He emphasized Nigeria’s interest in leveraging platforms such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, describing them as vital channels for sustainable development and economic stability.

The Co-Chairman of the 10th National Assembly also praised China’s achievements in technology, innovation, and poverty reduction, stating that Nigeria has much to learn from the Chinese experience.

He assured the delegation that the 10th National Assembly would actively support legislation aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation with China.

“China’s progress in industrial policy, poverty alleviation, and technological innovation serves as a model worth emulating. Our legislature is committed to fostering stronger institutional ties and promoting democratic innovation through parliamentary collaboration,” Abbas said.

He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the One China Principle and its readiness to build on the gains of President Tinubu’s recent diplomatic efforts to upgrade bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“Parliamentary diplomacy is more than ceremonial; it is a strategic avenue for achieving national goals. I envision a future where Nigeria and China work even more closely for the mutual benefit of our peoples,” he added.
