Twist In Kanu’s Arrest: DSS Reveals He Was Caught In Lagos Hotel

The Department of State Services (DSS) has revealed that it apprehended Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at a hotel in Lagos.

During Kanu’s ongoing terrorism trial, the first prosecution witness—whose identity was concealed for security reasons—testified behind a screen. The witness, a DSS operative referred to as PWAAA, was led in evidence by prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

PWAAA stated that, acting on intelligence, an eight-member DSS team was dispatched to a hotel in Ikeja on October 15, 2015, to conduct a room-to-room search, which led to Kanu’s arrest. The search was necessary because Kanu’s name was not listed in the hotel registry; he had checked in using a different native name.

According to The Nation, the operative said several items were recovered from Kanu, including IPOB pamphlets, branded cards, laptops, iPads, microphones, stands, flash drives, phone accessories, multiple mobile phones, perfumes, ATM cards, and a wristwatch.

These items, presented in four suitcases, were admitted into evidence by Justice James Omotosho.

The witness also told the court that Kanu’s interrogation was recorded. In it, Kanu admitted to founding and leading IPOB, as well as operating Radio Biafra without registration from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The interrogation video was played in court, along with a statement Kanu made on the day of his arrest.
