Reports had surfaced, particularly through Naija News, suggesting that Farotimi was arrested on Tuesday following a petition filed by Elumelu, alleging defamation by the human rights advocate.
Omoyele Sowore, a 2023 presidential candidate from the African Action Congress (AAC), hinted at Farotimi’s arrest in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday. However, a senior UBA source, speaking with SaharaReporters, categorically denied any involvement by Elumelu in the arrest. The source confirmed that Elumelu had neither authorized nor been involved in any police action against Farotimi.
“Tony Elumelu has no hand in Dele’s arrest,” the source clarified.
Earlier, Farotimi had claimed that police operatives had attempted to abduct him from Lagos, using deceptive tactics to facilitate his arrest, despite his willingness to comply with a police invitation to the Zone 2 police headquarters in Lagos. During a press conference on Monday, Farotimi alleged that the police action was in response to a petition allegedly filed by Afe Babalola, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
