UMG disclosed that negotiations for a new contract with TikTok had reached an impasse, and the existing deal, which expired on January 31, will not be renewed. The music giant cited various reasons for the breakdown, including a demand for higher compensation for its artists and songwriters, safeguards against AI-generated recordings, and addressing online safety concerns for users.
According to UMG, TikTok’s proposed payment to artists was significantly lower than what other major social platforms offer, and the platform failed to provide adequate solutions to content-related issues such as bullying, bigotry, harassment, and explicit deepfake content featuring artists.
UMG also accused TikTok of selectively removing music from some of their emerging artists, while retaining top-tier stars on the platform as a form of intimidation. In response, TikTok accused UMG of prioritizing greed over the well-being of their artists and songwriters.
This dispute could impact TikTok’s 1 billion users and UMG’s global roster of musicians and songwriters. Notable artists signed to UMG labels include Drake, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, U2, and Elton John. Nigerian entertainers such as Mr. Eazi, Tekno, Larry Gaaga, and Tiwa Savage are also signed to UMG.
If an agreement is not reached, the music of these artists will no longer be available for use in TikTok videos, potentially muting thousands of existing videos featuring their tracks. This disagreement has significant implications for both corporations and the broader online community.
