In a communique issued after an important stakeholders’ meeting in Fubara’s hometown of Opobo, located in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, the community emphasized the need for a fair and diplomatic resolution to the crisis currently unfolding in the state. They expressed the belief that the state of emergency is not only unconstitutional but also detrimental, causing severe hardship and economic difficulties for law-abiding citizens of Rivers State.

The communique, signed by key figures including Ben Daminabo, Prof. Blessing Jaja, Edward Namiesimagha, Dr. Roseline Apawari Uranta, Sam Stewart, Maclean Minimah, and Emma Taribo, stressed the strategic economic importance of Rivers as the “Treasure Base of the nation,” being the hub of the oil and gas industry and a key foreign exchange earner for Nigeria.

While reaffirming their commitment to the unity and stability of the state and the nation, the kinsmen criticized the state of emergency declaration, arguing that it failed to meet constitutional requirements. They pointed out that despite recent political tensions, Rivers State is not in a state of lawlessness or disorder. “The issues presented to you were exaggerated and do not reflect the true situation on the ground,” the communique read.

The kinsmen also highlighted Governor Fubara’s actions post-Supreme Court judgment, noting his acceptance of the ruling and his efforts to implement it. They mentioned his efforts in re-presenting the 2025 Appropriation Bill, clearing backlogs of salaries, and making substantial progress on the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex upgrade, which is now over 80 percent complete.

The communique dismissed claims of attacks on national assets in the state, stressing that no oil pipelines or lives had been harmed. They expressed disappointment in the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, for making unverified claims. “Rivers State remains peaceful, safe, and resilient,” they declared.

The kinsmen also stressed that the crisis is politically motivated, pointing out that the state is peaceful across all 23 local government areas, with normal economic activities ongoing and security agencies facing no significant challenges.

The community called on the President to reconsider the state of emergency declaration and Governor Fubara’s suspension, suggesting that more diplomatic measures, including high-level engagement with stakeholders, be used to address tensions and improve the effectiveness of security agencies.

The communique concluded by reaffirming their unwavering support for the President’s administration and commitment to the peace, security, and development of the nation, while expressing readiness to work with the federal government to ensure the stability and prosperity of Rivers State.
