A student at the University of Maiduguri, identified as Saleem Ibrahim, has been accused of assaulting Hauwa Abatcha Ngala, a student at the College of Nursing Sciences, Maiduguri, after she rejected his romantic advances.
The incident came to light through a post made by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, on Friday.
According to reports, Saleem, who is enrolled in the Department of Biochemistry, had persistently pressured Hauwa to reciprocate his feelings despite her clear lack of interest in him.
Despite Hauwa’s efforts to distance herself from Saleem’s unwanted attention, he allegedly threatened her with grave consequences if she did not comply with his demands, including uttering threats of violence.
On the evening of Monday, February 26, 2024, around 8:30 pm, Saleem purportedly assaulted Hauwa physically, striking her forcefully with a club multiple times until she lost consciousness, all because she refused his advances.
Following the attack, Saleem fled the scene, leaving Hauwa injured. Fortunately, her relatives intervened promptly, saving her life.
The incident was reported to the police on the same night, and Hauwa received urgent medical assistance.
Saleem was apprehended later that night by Joint Task Force (JTF) civilian volunteers and handed over to the police at the Gomari Division Office.
