NLC Condemns IMF For Dismissing Fuel Subsidy Removal Concerns
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for denying responsibility for the Nigerian government’s recent removal of the petrol subsidy. The NLC described this denial as cynical, highlighting it as part of a broader pattern of the IMF and World Bank imposing harsh economic policies on developing nations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NLC National President Joe Ajaaero condemned the IMF for framing its detrimental recommendations as growth strategies, which have resulted in increased socioeconomic hardship and stagnation in Nigeria and other countries that have followed its misguided advice.
During a press conference at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, DC, Abebe Selassie, the IMF’s African Region Director, characterized the subsidy removal as a domestic issue.
The NLC responded by criticizing the IMF’s statement as evasive, arguing that while it labeled the subsidy removal a “domestic decision,” it overlooks the IMF’s considerable influence on policymaking in developing countries. Despite this denial, the NLC pointed out that the IMF regularly advocates for subsidy cuts as essential for fiscal sustainability, rendering its disavowal disingenuous in a country that often complies with such recommendations.
The NLC expressed growing concern over the IMF’s stance, suggesting that the organization is attempting to distance itself from the potential backlash of its policies. “Nigerians are not naive; we understand the destructive effects of these harmful strategies on Nigeria and Africa,” the union stated.
Furthermore, the NLC highlighted the IMF and World Bank’s disregard for the social costs of their policies. While the IMF acknowledges these costs, it merely suggests that governments should expand social protections to mitigate hardships. The NLC criticized this approach as leaving people reliant on ineffective handouts, referencing initiatives like the RICE program.
