Presenting the suspects to the press, the Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, Olatunji Disu, revealed that a shrine allegedly used by the witch doctor to empower the criminals for their illicit activities had been seized.

Among the prime suspects identified by the police chief were Chidube, Anthony, and Kelechi, with Chidube reportedly serving as the linchpin of the car-snatching ring. Notably, Chidube was implicated in training his cohorts in the art of car theft, while Kelechi, a skilled mechanic, specialized in disabling vehicle tracking devices. The syndicate’s modus operandi involved using spare keys to steal cars, with many of the stolen vehicles finding their way to Kano and Anambra states for resale or dismantling.

“Our witch doctor has been apprehended. He orchestrates the timing of their operations, indicating when it’s safe to strike. Additionally, we’ve nabbed a gang of armed robbers who target individuals at banks, resorting to violence if met with resistance. Their firearms have been confiscated,” Commissioner Disu declared.

According to the police chief, the criminal enterprise commenced operations in January 2023 and has since been responsible for the theft of over 40 vehicles. Members of the syndicate converged in Port Harcourt from various states to carry out their nefarious activities, which included both car snatching and theft from parked vehicles.

Detailing the fate of the stolen cars, Commissioner Disu explained, “The vehicles are either sold off or dismantled at a scrap yard in Mgbuka-Obosi, Onitsha, where they are stripped for spare parts.”

The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in Rivers State, sending a strong message of deterrence to would-be criminals and offering a glimmer of hope to victims of car theft in the region.
