on

The rising cost of cement in Nigeria has become a major concern for builders, contractors, and homeowners, as construction expenses continue to climb.

A market survey by Naija News shows that prices vary significantly depending on the manufacturer, type, and intended use of the cement.

  • Dangote Cement – ₦10,200 per 50kg bag

  • BUA Cement – ₦10,000 per 50kg bag

  • Plaster of Paris (POP) Cement – ₦10,000 per bag

  • White Cement – ₦16,000 per bag

  • Refractory Solution Castable Cement (Fire Cement) – ₦33,000 per bag

Industry leaders Dangote and BUA currently retail their standard 50kg bags between ₦10,000 and ₦10,200, reflecting the impact of high energy costs, logistics challenges, and foreign exchange instability.

Specialty cement products attract higher prices: POP cement, widely used for ceilings and decorative finishes, sells for ₦10,000 per bag, while white cement for tiling and finishing works goes for ₦16,000. At the premium end, fire-resistant refractory cement used in industrial projects costs as much as ₦33,000 per bag.

Factors Driving Rising Cement Prices

  • Energy Costs – Cement production is energy-intensive, and soaring gas and power prices have driven up costs.

  • Logistics & Transportation – Poor road conditions, rising diesel prices, and haulage expenses add to the final retail cost.

  • Forex Volatility – With many inputs and machinery tied to the U.S. dollar, naira depreciation directly affects production costs.

  • Market Demand – Peak construction periods drive up demand and, in turn, retail prices.

  • Specialization – POP, white, and fire cement serve niche purposes, come from limited producers, and have higher production costs.
