EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwajuren spoke out about the agency’s challenges, stressing that without an anti-graft body, Nigeria would be left vulnerable to widespread corruption. He highlighted the EFCC’s vital role in ensuring accountability and integrity in governance.
Uwajuren asserted that those behind the legal challenge are “feeling the heat” from the EFCC’s activities and are trying to evade accountability. “We are shocked by the current situation,” he stated on Channels Television’s breakfast show, The Morning Brief. “Nigerians should recognize this ploy and oppose it; our country cannot survive without the EFCC given the scale of corruption we face.”
He expressed concern that some individuals would resort to legal action against the EFCC when corruption is a pressing issue in Nigeria. “I doubt that the EFCC is the primary concern for citizens in their states. What we see is simply those feeling the pressure from the EFCC trying to undermine its efforts,” he explained.
According to Uwajuren, the EFCC’s establishment is rooted in Nigerian law, and challenges to its legality aim to derail the agency’s work. “Those advocating for the EFCC’s dissolution are seeking to obstruct the fight against corruption and avoid accountability in their regions,” he concluded.
