According to Nairobi County officials, the eight-storey structure in Kahawa West, a densely populated area north of the city, had been marked for demolition. The Kenya Red Cross reported that multiple families are believed to be trapped beneath the wreckage.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja told reporters that one woman was injured while standing outside the building during the collapse, but he anticipated that the overall number of casualties would be low. “She is currently stable and receiving treatment,” he noted, adding that residents of nearby buildings would need to evacuate.
The incident drew many spectators to the site, which is surrounded by other tall structures and a church.
Catherine Wanjiku, a resident since 2017, expressed relief at having escaped just in time. “I don’t feel good because I moved out yesterday. I’m shaken and stressed. I have friends whose belongings were destroyed,” the 33-year-old shared.
A document from Nairobi County dated October 16 revealed that the building had been constructed and occupied without the necessary approvals. Tenants had been ordered to vacate within two weeks.
Despite a construction boom in East Africa, corruption has allowed contractors to bypass regulations and take shortcuts. In September 2022, a six-storey building collapsed on the outskirts of Nairobi, killing five people. Additionally, a six-floor apartment building in northeastern Nairobi collapsed in April 2016 after heavy rainfall led to flooding, resulting in 49 fatalities. That structure, completed just two years earlier, was also marked for demolition due to being deemed structurally unsound.
