VeryDarkMan Fires Message To IGP, Seeks Swift Action Over Viral Police Bribery Allegations

Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, to investigate a police officer seen in a viral video allegedly demanding a bribe from a motorist.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In the video shared on VDM’s social media platforms, the officer was seen stopping a driver for a routine inspection and requesting his driver’s licence and other vehicle documents.

After examining the documents, the officer allegedly demanded money from the motorist, who insisted he had nothing to offer.

The footage appeared to show the officer returning the vehicle documents but retaining the driver’s licence. During the encounter, the officer was also heard saying, “If it is another person or Igbo or other persons, I will just say go and park there.”

Reacting to the video, VeryDarkMan condemned the officer’s comments, describing them as discriminatory and unbecoming of a law enforcement officer expected to treat all Nigerians equally.

“This is coming from a public servant that has been trained to see everybody as equal, to see all tribes as Nigerians. He opened his mouth to say, ‘If it is another person or Igbo or other persons, I will just say go and park there,'” he said.

The activist further alleged that the officer’s refusal to return the driver’s licence despite finding no fault with the documents suggested an attempt to extort the motorist.

According to VDM, the officer’s statement telling the driver to “go and do better thing make you dey go” implied that he was demanding money before allowing the motorist to continue his journey.

He argued that motorists who comply with licensing and vehicle documentation requirements should not still be subjected to alleged extortion at police checkpoints.

“Forget your driver’s licence, just carry ₦200 for police checkpoints. So let’s stop getting driver’s licences and car documents. Make we just carry ₦200 and ₦500 dey waka for road, then say ‘Police, take’ at every checkpoint,” he said.

VDM warned that if such conduct goes unchecked, it could encourage harassment of motorists and promote ethnic profiling within the Nigeria Police Force.

Calling for disciplinary action, he said, “The Nigerian Police stopped a man by the road and asked for money because the guy didn’t want to give him money. He said, ‘If you are Igbo, I would have detained you.’ A Nigerian Police officer? A tribalist? Calling on the Inspector General of Police to immediately investigate and dismiss those tribalists wearing the police uniform.”
