A recently circulated video on social media captures an unidentified cleric wielding an AK47 inside a church. In the footage, which surfaced on Thursday morning and obtained by Naija News, the cleric, clad in a white robe, is shown cocking and discharging the firearm while congregants observe.
The person recording the video can be heard praising the cleric, referring to them as their Reverend Father, and suggesting that the church might be Catholic. However, the specific location of the church remains undisclosed at the time of this report.
The video, shared by SaharaReporters, has sparked discussions reminiscent of a previous incident in February involving House on the Rock Church in Abuja. During a Sunday service, Pastor Uche Aigbe caused a stir by appearing on the pulpit with an AK-47 rifle.
Explaining his action, Pastor Aigbe asserted, “Some people are looking for my trouble. And I came here prepared. Today, there are some pastors with the gift of divination who go about ripping people off. This is why we should carry our ‘guns’ and defend ourselves. I will particularly be coming very soon for some of you sleeping in the church,” eliciting laughter from the congregation.
However, outside his church, Pastor Aigbe faced criticism, leading to his detention on Monday. In response to the controversy, House on the Rock issued a statement clarifying that Pastor Aigbe brandished the gun to illustrate his message on ‘Guarding your Faith.’
The statement acknowledged Pastor Aigbe’s leadership within the church since 1999 but deemed his action of carrying the firearm ill-advised and regrettable. Pastor Aigbe promptly expressed remorse for his behavior.
As a church, House on the Rock emphasized its rejection of all forms of violence, aligning with the gospel teachings of peace and goodwill. They assured full cooperation with the authorities’ investigations and committed to internal measures to prevent similar breaches in the future.
