Usman Buda, a butcher in Sokoto state, has tragically lost his life after being stoned to death by an angry mob. The incident took place at the Sokoto abattoir on Sunday, following remarks that were perceived as insulting to Prophet Muhammad.
Ahmad Rufai, the spokesperson for the Sokoto police, confirmed the incident and stated that the police promptly responded to a distress call. However, upon arrival, the mob had already fled the scene. Buda was found unconscious and immediately rushed to Usmanu Danfodio Teaching Hospital Sokoto (UDUTH) for treatment. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The statement issued by the police indicated that Buda, a resident of Gwandu LGA, had allegedly blasphemed Prophet Muhammad, which incited the mob to attack him and inflict severe injuries.
Following the incident, the police, led by the Commissioner of Police, area commander metro, and the DPO Kwanni, initiated an investigation into the matter. Calm has been restored in the area, but the authorities are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This tragic event recalls a similar incident in May 2022, where Deborah Samuel, a student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was attacked by a mob and set on fire over allegations of blasphemy. Such incidents highlight the importance of promoting tolerance, understanding, and respect for diverse beliefs to prevent acts of violence and safeguard communal harmony.
