APC Shake-Up: Real Reason Uzodimma Lost Convention Committee Role

The leadership adjustment, announced on Friday, was reportedly driven by zoning considerations and a desire to accord due recognition to senior party figures, according to sources within the APC who spoke with Sunday Punch.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, Masari was formally unveiled as chairman of the influential committee, while former Senate President, Pius Anyim, was appointed Vice Chairman I.
Although Uzodimma was initially named chairman of the 73-member committee, he was subsequently reassigned as treasurer. Party insiders maintained that the move was administrative rather than disciplinary.
A senior member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) explained that the reshuffle was intended to ensure internal balance and to honour elder statesmen who are not currently pursuing elective office.
“The party leadership believed that experienced senior members should be entrusted with the chairmanship. That informed the decision to appoint Alhaji Masari and Senator Pius Anyim,” the source said, noting that both men are seasoned party leaders whose neutrality could enhance coordination.
The official stressed that Uzodimma’s reassignment was unrelated to any internal disagreement, emphasizing that he would continue to play a prominent role within the party, particularly in his capacity as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.
Another top APC official added that regional balance also influenced the decision, especially given that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is from the South.
“With the president coming from the South, it was considered appropriate for a northern APC leader to chair the convention committee,” the source explained.
He further disclosed that the reconstituted committee was deliberately structured to reflect broad party inclusion, comprising serving governors, key National Assembly leaders, former national chairmen, and senior cabinet members, including ministers overseeing Defence, Interior, Works, and other portfolios.
Preparations for the APC National Convention, slated for March 27 and 28, 2026, are already underway. Party insiders indicated that the process of selecting a new National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to be largely consensus-driven.
“Forms are already being purchased, and we are optimistic about a smooth and rancour-free convention,” one official said.
However, when contacted for comment on Uzodimma’s replacement, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru declined to elaborate.
“I have nothing to say on that,” he told Sunday Punch.
