Violent Outburst as Shaibu Secures Victory In PDP Parallel Primary Amid Gunshots

On February 22, the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a parallel Congress, resulting in the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, emerging as the winner of a factional PDP primary election. Shaibu secured 301 votes out of the total 559 cast at the primary. The first set of delegates claimed they were chased away by security agencies during accreditation at the official venue, alleging discrepancies in the list of delegates provided by the national leadership, including names from Bayelsa state and APC members.

Bartholomew Moses declared Shaibu the winner, but the announcement was marred by an invasion of gunmen alleged to be Edo State Security Network personnel. Clad in vigilante outfits and arriving in various vehicles, they fired shots into the air, causing chaos and panic.

Prior to the election, Festus Owu and protesting delegates complained to Shaibu at his official lodge, asserting that they had been disenfranchised. Shaibu reassured them, urging peace and emphasizing their right to participate. Despite the disturbance by the alleged security personnel, Shaibu expressed confidence that the election would proceed smoothly with authentic delegates.

In a later statement to journalists, Shaibu clarified that the protesting crowd outside the venue consisted of legitimate delegates who were denied accreditation. He emphasized the importance of holding a valid election with authentic delegates to ensure the credibility of the results.
