Visa Woes Highlight Struggle For A Borderless Africa
CNN journalist Larry Madowo recently expressed frustration on social media over the steep cost of obtaining a one-month single-entry visa to Nigeria. The Kenyan-born media figure shared a video from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, where he highlighted the financial burden of the visa process. In the video, Madowo voiced his concerns, stating that while the visa fee itself is $25, additional charges including a $20 processing fee and $170 for biometrics result in a total cost of $215 per entry.
This marks the third time Madowo has incurred these expenses in the current year alone. He questioned the feasibility of achieving a borderless Africa, particularly in light of initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), when visa requirements pose such significant barriers to travel and integration across the continent.
