Voices Of Nigeria’s Youth: Desires For Growth And ProgressThe entire Lagos neighborhood was engulfed in darkness, pierced only by the harsh sounds of portable and standby generators, shattering the early morning calm. The beleaguered power company was predictably absent, leaving residents to endure uncomfortable conditions in 34-degree Celsius heat. Those who dared to venture outside sweated profusely as voracious mosquitoes feasted on them, thriving in the stillness.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Suddenly, three loud bangs echoed against the massive steel door, followed by a deep, menacing voice demanding, “Open the door!” The voice, intense and raspy, was enough to wake the dead. The noise jolted the occupants of a three-bedroom apartment from their sleep, transforming sweet dreams into nightmares. It was 4:20 AM, and they quickly realized that the situation was far from trivial: a gang of armed robbers was at their door.

For 15 agonizing minutes, the robbers’ demands went unanswered as residents peeked through windows, contemplating whether to hide in the toilet or seek refuge on the roof. Panic filled the air, triggering a sense of delirium among the unprepared occupants. What could they do in such a dire situation? Say their last prayers? Call the police? Attempt to defend themselves? Or just let the intruders in?

As the occupants hesitated, they caught sight of at least a dozen robbers outside. Eventually, they opened the door, and the leader of the gang swaggered in, flanked by four accomplices, while others stationed themselves strategically outside. The oldest among them looked no older than 23, and all were bold, menacing youths ready to unleash violence if necessary.

“Please cooperate with us; we won’t hurt anyone if you comply,” the leader warned the head of the family. He began his tale, “I am a university graduate, and I’ve searched for a job for three years. This is all I can do to survive, and I have nothing to lose. If you resist, I will kill you.” This grim narrative is a common story across Nigeria today, as young people yearn for help that never arrives.

With an estimated population of 206 million in 2020, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and ranks seventh globally. This demographic structure holds significant economic potential, particularly due to the country’s youthful population. With a median age of 18.1 years, Nigeria has the largest youth population in the world, with approximately 70% of its citizens under 30 and 42% under 15. This young demographic could serve as a tremendous economic asset, enhancing Nigeria’s standing as both a regional and global economic player. When combined with urbanization, youthful populations often correlate with economic development.

To propel Nigeria forward, the focus must be on these young individuals who are seeking assistance. These young men and women represent the elite workforce that drives the nation, serving in the police and military to protect our streets and defend our country. They build our infrastructure and contribute significantly to various sectors.
