“From the moment the President signed the bill, it became effective immediately and applies to all categories of workers,” Wabba said, adding that several states have already implemented the new wage, including Borno, where the governor has extended the ₦70,000 pay to teachers. However, he pointed out that other states have yet to announce when they will roll out the new wage.

Wabba also lamented the difficult economic situation in Nigeria, noting that workers have been pushed to their breaking point. “Everyone is aware of the dire state of the Nigerian economy. Workers have been pushed to their limits, and the situation has reached an extreme,” he said.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also voiced its frustration, accusing governors who are delaying the wage implementation of showing a lack of compassion for workers. The NLC has vowed to take a firm stand against these governors, who they believe are betraying the workers they were elected to serve.

NLC Orders Strike Over ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Implementation

Meanwhile, the NLC has instructed workers in states that have not yet implemented the ₦70,000 minimum wage to go on strike starting December 1, 2024. This directive was made during the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held over the weekend.

The NLC accused the governors in non-compliant states of betraying the workers by denying them their rights. The NLC statement read in part: “The persistent delay and outright refusal by some state governments to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act is a betrayal that flies in the face of both legality and morality, as workers continue to be denied their rightful wages amidst rising economic hardship.”

The NLC also announced plans to establish a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee to monitor progress across the country. The committee will lead a nationwide awareness campaign and ensure compliance by educating workers and citizens on the importance of resisting these delays.

“All state councils where the National Minimum Wage has not been fully implemented by the last day of November 2024 have been directed to proceed on strike beginning December 1, 2024,” the NLC said, reaffirming that Nigerian workers will not relent until the minimum wage is fully enforced nationwide.
