The 34-year-old forward made his first appearance of the tournament on Wednesday night, coming off the bench in the second half as Brazil completed the group stage unbeaten and finished top of Group C with seven points.
Neymar replaced Matheus Cunha after missing Brazil’s opening matches against Morocco and Haiti due to a calf injury that had sidelined him since the start of the competition.
Brazil’s victory was inspired by a brilliant performance from Vinicius Junior, who scored twice, while Matheus Cunha added the third goal to seal a comfortable win for the five-time world champions.
Reflecting on his return to the global stage, Neymar described the experience as one of the most meaningful moments of his football career.
According to the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, representing Brazil at the World Cup remains a lifelong dream, and returning to action after injury made the occasion even more special.
“There is no doubt this is one of the most special days of my career,” Neymar said. “Every young Brazilian dreams of playing for the Seleção, and I’m grateful to have this opportunity.”
The veteran forward admitted he felt a huge sense of relief after finally returning to the pitch, revealing that the emotions became overwhelming after the match.
“I had been away for a long time and was desperate to get back. After the game, I became emotional and cried on my own because it felt incredible to experience all of this again,” he said.
Neymar also expressed gratitude to Brazilian supporters, as well as his family and close friends, for their encouragement throughout his recovery period.
The Santos forward reserved special praise for Vinicius Junior, who has emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Describing the Real Madrid winger as Brazil’s key player at the World Cup, Neymar credited him for consistently delivering decisive performances when the team needed him most.
“Vinicius Jr is our star at this World Cup. He’s winning matches for us and performing exceptionally well,” Neymar said.
Vinicius has now scored four goals in three World Cup appearances, having also found the back of the net in Brazil’s earlier victories over Morocco and Haiti.
