We Don’t Need Trophies To Make Money – Man United Co-Owner Glazer Sparks Outrage
Manchester United co-owner Avram Glazer has sparked controversy after suggesting that the club can remain financially successful and commercially attractive even without winning major trophies.
The 66-year-old American businessman made the remarks at Deutsche Bank’s inaugural Sports Investment Conference in London, where he discussed the relationship between sporting achievements and the financial value of football clubs.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Glazer argued that Manchester United’s commercial strength does not necessarily depend on winning silverware, pointing to American sports franchises such as the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys, which have maintained strong global commercial appeal despite lengthy periods without major trophies.
Glazer, who has been involved in Manchester United’s ownership since 2003, reportedly believes the club can continue generating substantial revenue even when its performances on the pitch fall below expectations.
His position has drawn comparisons with comments made by former Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who told investors in May 2018 that the team’s sporting performance had little meaningful impact on the club’s commercial operations.
Despite their recent difficulties, Manchester United remain among the world’s most valuable football clubs. Forbes ranks the English side third globally, behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, Glazer’s comments come at a time when dissatisfaction among United supporters over the club’s ownership and performances continues to grow. The Glazer family has faced repeated protests from fans, including during the club’s recent Champions League encounter against Roma.
Manchester United ended a nine-match winless run with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over the Italian side. Matias Soule and Donyell Malen initially gave Roma the advantage before Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty and Matheus Cunha scored twice to complete the comeback.
Cunha was later sent off during stoppage time and reportedly required an escort from the pitch after the final whistle.
Despite the European victory, Manchester United remain in a precarious position in the Premier League, sitting just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Manager Michael Carrick is under increasing pressure to improve the team’s results as United prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday, with supporters hoping for a turnaround in the club’s domestic campaign.
