You Sold Suffering As Soft Life – Man Exposes Friend’s Alleged Struggles After Relocating To UK

A man has sparked conversations on social media after recounting the alleged struggles of a Nigerian family whose relocation to the United Kingdom reportedly turned into a difficult experience, despite the husband’s previous social media posts portraying life abroad as luxurious.

The account was shared on X by a user identified as @TeeMento, who claimed that his friend relocated to the UK three years ago and frequently posted pictures of beautiful locations, expensive gadgets, shopping trips to Tesco and train journeys while encouraging others to leave Nigeria.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the man explained that his friend recently brought his wife and two children to join him in the UK. However, just two weeks after their arrival, the wife reportedly contacted him privately to express dissatisfaction with the family’s living conditions.

The woman allegedly revealed that they were sharing a single room with her husband and two other men from his village. She claimed that they slept on the floor, used a toilet shared by eight people and lived in accommodation affected by mould.

She also reportedly disclosed that her husband worked as a cleaner and security worker for as many as 18 hours daily. According to her account, he had previously spent four months sleeping inside his car, while the attractive photographs he shared online were allegedly taken during his days off at different locations.

The woman further claimed that her husband borrowed £4,000 to facilitate the family’s relocation, only for them to find themselves living in conditions she considered worse than their previous two-bedroom apartment in Lagos.

The narrator said his friend later contacted him angrily, accusing his wife of damaging his public image by revealing their difficult circumstances. The man reportedly insisted that she needed to exercise patience because everyone had to start somewhere.

However, the narrator said he challenged his friend over allegedly presenting a misleading picture of life abroad instead of being honest about his struggles.

Recounting their conversation, he said he told his friend, “But you lied. You sold suffering as soft life.”

According to the post, the friend responded, “If I told the truth, who will respect me?”

The narrator concluded that the experience had made him realise that some Nigerians living abroad may be struggling financially and socially while maintaining an appearance of comfort and success on social media.

The account has reignited conversations about the realities of relocating abroad, the pressure to maintain appearances online and the difference between social media portrayals of foreign life and people’s actual living conditions.
