We Won’t Be Used And Dumped!” – Ijaw Youth President Slams One-Term Conspiracy Against Fubara
The President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Theophilus Alaye, has asserted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is fully entitled to contest for re-election in 2027, as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, Alaye emphasized that the people of Rivers State alone have the authority to decide who governs them—not political elites or backdoor arrangements.
His remarks were in response to reports suggesting that part of a negotiated settlement for Governor Fubara’s reinstatement included a condition that he forgo a second term bid in 2027.
Alaye firmly rejected any such arrangement, especially if it was influenced by Fubara’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike, or other political actors. He stressed that no one should pressure the governor into giving up his constitutional rights for political convenience.
“The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, is a Nigerian citizen, and under the Constitution, he has every right to seek a second term. If in 2027 the people believe he has delivered good governance, they will have the final say on whether he should continue or not,” Alaye stated.
He further insisted that the Ijaw Youth Council would not support any deal that restricts Fubara to a single term, describing such attempts as oppressive and unconstitutional.
“We have always resisted political oppression,” he said. “If there’s truly an agreement that bars him from re-election, we will not support it. It is a violation of his fundamental rights, and we cannot sit idly while a few individuals try to override the will of the people.”
Alaye reiterated the council’s commitment to backing Governor Fubara’s re-election if he performs well, warning that the IYC would not allow any form of political subjugation.
This follows President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025, during which Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State Assembly were suspended amid escalating political tensions. In June, Tinubu facilitated a truce among the rival factions, with all parties pledging to work toward peace.
