Weather Warning: NiMet Predicts Thunderstorms, Rainfall Across Nigeria From Monday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory, forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of Nigeria between Monday and Wednesday.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the agency gave the warning in its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, noting that light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across parts of the northern, North-Central and southern regions at different periods.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in some locations and advised residents, motorists and other road users to exercise caution during periods of severe weather. The agency also urged members of the public to secure loose objects around their homes and avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall.
For Monday morning, NiMet forecast thunderstorms accompanied by light rain over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states. The agency also predicted scattered thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across parts of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi later in the day.
In the North-Central region, parts of Niger State are expected to experience thunderstorms with light rain during the morning. More areas within the region could record thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the afternoon or evening.
Across the southern states, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain expected over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. More areas in the region are expected to experience thunderstorms and light rain later in the afternoon or evening.
For Tuesday morning, the agency predicted patches of cloud across the northern region, with thunderstorms and light rain likely over parts of Taraba State. By the afternoon or evening, most parts of the northern region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall.
NiMet also forecast partly cloudy conditions across the North-Central region on Tuesday morning, with further changes in weather conditions expected as the day progresses.
The agency advised the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas where thunderstorms, strong winds and rainfall are expected. Motorists were encouraged to exercise caution on the roads, while airlines and other transport operators were advised to pay close attention to prevailing weather conditions when planning operations.
