Why Dialogue With Bandits Will Not Work- Shehu Sani Reveals

Former senator and prominent figure, Shehu Sani, has shed light on the reasons why engaging in dialogue between the Federal Government and bandits is unlikely to yield desired results. Highlighting the complexities of negotiating with bandits, Sani emphasized that these criminal elements often lack a unified structure or leadership hierarchy. As a result, reaching a comprehensive and lasting agreement becomes increasingly difficult. The fragmented nature of banditry makes it challenging to establish trust and hold meaningful dialogue, hindering the effectiveness of any negotiation attempts.

He further added that any dialogue with bandits will end badly, noting down that Governors and former Governors who tried it regretted it.

“Dialogue with Bandits will not work because of these three reasons; they are not an armed movement founded for the pursuit of any religious, ethnic or political causes, other than extortion by atrocious blackmail, abductions and cold blooded murder of innocent citizens. Two, they are not united under a single leadership but operates in clusters and criminal gangs ;three, their motivation is money; they kill and abduct for money.”

“Bandits are unlike ISWAP and Boko elements whose acts of abduction, terrorist attacks and slaughter of innocent citizens is done under the guise of religion. Dialogue with Bandits is a waste of time. Those Governors who tried it later regretted it.”
