In a recent disclosure, Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo delved into the intricacies behind his decision to pick the late Umaru Yar’Adua as his successor. This decision had attracted controversy given the widespread knowledge of Yar’Adua’s ill health. Now, Obasanjo has cleared the air on the rationale behind his choice. CONTINUE READING
Obasanjo began, “I set up a committee, chaired by the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu, to identify a suitable successor. The committee extensively evaluated numerous candidates, subjecting each to rigorous scrutiny.”
He went on to detail the committee’s findings, “After a thorough assessment, Umaru was ranked at the top. Their strongest argument supporting him was his remarkable integrity and the general consensus that he wouldn’t engage in corrupt practices.”
However, Obasanjo acknowledged the concerns about Yar’Adua’s health but explained that he sought expert advice to allay these fears. “Yes, I was aware of the health issues. But I consulted a medical specialist to offer an opinion on Yar’Adua’s medical reports. To ensure an unbiased review, I redacted Umaru’s name from the reports. But, crucially, he posited that such a patient would be as fit as any other individual.” CONTINUE READING
Obasanjo vehemently refuted the notion that he had anticipated Yar’Adua’s demise and therefore strategically positioned him as the President. “All such insinuations are completely baseless. I acted in the best interest of the nation, relying on expert advice. The narrative I’ve shared is the honest truth,” he concluded.
The former President’s revelations offer a deeper understanding of the political machinations during that crucial transition period, and it’s clear that his decisions were driven by the country’s greater good rather than personal interests.
