During an enlightening interaction with Seun Okin of Channels TV, Falana dissected the surge in hostility towards the judiciary. He pointed out that many of the individuals leading the charge against the judiciary are first-time voters, with heightened sentiments and expectations, believing that their chosen candidate must be declared the winner at all costs.

Falana emphasized, “You know some of the people are voting for the first time and they believe rightly or wrongly their candidate most be declared winner and I think that is what is going on whether you like it or not our candidate must be declared the winner and that is not what the PEPT is all about.”

Highlighting the importance of the judiciary’s independence, he added,  “The justices to look at the event brought in by the parties, apply the law and give a decision as they even if heaven must fall, and heaven must not fall anyway the judges must not be intimidated, they must give their decisions regardless of blackmail or intimidation, convinced they can justify their judgement, that is what is required by them to determine the evidence apply the law and deliver the judgement, one way or the other some will win some will lose but those who lose and are grieved will have another opportunity to approach the supreme court””

Falana’s voice joins a chorus of others who advocate for judicial autonomy and believe that the essence of democracy is for institutions to operate without undue interference.

Reacting to the forthcoming PEPT judgment set for the 6th of September, Shagiri tweeted, “Justice must prevail regardless of whose ox is gored.”

Titi Lawson on Facebook said, “Let’s respect our institutions. They’re the pillars of our democracy.”

Emeka Chukwu, a political analyst, opined, “While the enthusiasm of first-time voters is commendable, it’s crucial for everyone to understand the nuances of our judicial process. It’s not about personal preferences, but about the rule of law.”

The upcoming judgment has, no doubt, placed Nigeria’s judiciary in the spotlight, and all eyes will be on the PEPT to see how it navigates these turbulent water
