Adeyanju argued that Nigerian politicians should not receive salaries, suggesting that even the president should use a personal vehicle instead of official ones, given their existing wealth.
He criticized the extensive number of aides employed by high-ranking officials, noting that there are over 2,000 aides collectively in the National Assembly.
Drawing from Kenya’s example, where the president reduced cabinet positions after public outcry over government waste, Adeyanju called for similar measures in Nigeria to cut unnecessary spending.
Adeyanju stated, “No politician should be paid a salary in Nigeria because the country is poor. We need to make politics about service; even the president should use his personal car. We shouldn’t be purchasing official cars for government officials, as anyone at the presidential level is already wealthy.”
He added, “Politicians view their roles as full-time jobs. Beyond their salaries, they each have 10 to 20 aides. The top officials in the National Assembly, including the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Chief Whip, collectively employ over 2,000 aides.”
Adeyanju emphasized the need for similar reforms in Nigeria, pointing out, “In Kenya, the president dismissed nearly half of his cabinet due to public dissatisfaction with government spending. Nigeria needs to take similar action to address excessive expenditure.
