According to Naija News, the #EndBadGovernance protests, which called for an end to hardship, hunger, and poor governance, began on August 1 and concluded on August 10.

In an interview with Vanguard, Abdulaziz Sulaiman, Spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), explained the motivations behind the northern participation. He cited hunger, marginalization, and pervasive poverty as key reasons for the North’s heightened involvement.

Sulaiman noted that while the NEF has yet to formally address this matter, the current hunger protests have garnered substantial attention. He attributed the North’s active participation to severe food insecurity, rising essential goods prices, and the ongoing security issues in the region.

He elaborated, “Northern Nigeria has long suffered from high poverty levels and insecurity, with many communities struggling to access nutritious food regularly. The region’s significant number of smallholder farmers have been adversely affected by insurgents and bandits, which have damaged crop yields and livelihoods.”

Sulaiman continued, “Consequently, many in the North face food shortages and skyrocketing food prices, creating a sense of frustration that has driven their involvement in the protests. Additionally, the North has historically been underserved by successive governments, lacking essential infrastructure, healthcare, and educational opportunities.”

He concluded, “This long-standing neglect has fueled a profound sense of disillusionment and anger among the region’s youth, who see the current food crisis as yet another example of governmental failure to address their needs.
