Why Tinubu’s Second Term Is Certain – Oshiomhole Reveals

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Oshiomhole acknowledged public concerns about the president’s performance two years into his tenure, especially regarding unmet campaign promises. However, he insisted that Tinubu has already achieved enough to merit a second term.
When asked whether Tinubu could win a free and fair election today despite Nigeria’s economic, political, and security challenges, the former President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) pointed to recent defections to the APC as evidence of growing support. He attributed these defections to Tinubu’s efforts in addressing national issues.
“He will win convincingly,” Oshiomhole stated. “Just this morning, some senators who rejoined the APC said they were co-founders of the party. One senator shared that, before Tinubu took office, his constituents couldn’t even access their farmlands due to insecurity. But now, they’ve returned to their farms, and that’s a major achievement.”
Oshiomhole also highlighted improvements in infrastructure, citing newly constructed roads that have significantly improved life in some senatorial districts. He noted that while the government still has more work to do, many Nigerians in various regions are already seeing meaningful change.
He cautioned against generalizing criticisms, stating: “Sometimes, we’re too quick to dismiss progress. If someone scores 49%, we call it failure without considering the context or areas of improvement.”
Oshiomhole further praised Tinubu’s bold economic reforms, particularly the abolition of the previous exchange rate system that allowed privileged individuals connected to the Central Bank to profit unfairly.
“President Tinubu could have taken advantage of that system but chose not to,” he said. “From day one, he insisted that if something is wrong, he won’t touch it. Now, the exchange rate is the same for everyone—whether you’re the president, a senator, or an ordinary citizen.”
He emphasized that dismantling such a corrupt system took courage, especially when it benefited powerful individuals in the banking sector who thrived on speculative profits.
