The latest development comes after a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The meeting, held on Thursday at the President’s official residence, brought together key figures including suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and other major political stakeholders. All parties agreed to set aside their differences, declaring that peace has now returned to Rivers State.
Among those present were the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack, as well as the state chairmen of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Former governorship candidate Magnus Abe, federal lawmakers from Rivers State, and senior government officials also attended.
Speaking after the closed-door session, Wike said all factions had resolved to work together for the progress of the state, calling it a moment of thanksgiving.
“We give glory to God that peace has finally returned to the state. We have all agreed to work with the Governor, and he has agreed to work with all of us,” Wike said. “We belong to the same political family, and as humans, disagreements are natural. But now, we’ve come to a resolution and reported it to the President. As far as I’m concerned, everything is settled. I urge everyone to join hands with us — there is no more conflict, only unity.”
Governor Fubara echoed similar sentiments: “For me, this is a significant day. What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and tonight, with the support of Mr President and the leaders of our state, peace has returned. We will do everything within our power to ensure it is sustained.”
It’s worth recalling that tensions in Rivers State escalated earlier in March when President Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State Assembly, temporarily appointing an administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.
