Wike made these statements during the groundbreaking ceremony for judges’ quarters in Katampe District, Abuja, on Monday. The project will feature 40 residences for judges and is expected to be completed within 15 months.
He noted, “Mr. President consistently asks how we can ensure the judiciary’s independence. A crucial factor is the tenure of judicial officers. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General has already addressed this by amending the constitution to allow judicial officers to retire at age 70.
“Moreover, the president recognizes that the conditions of service are vital for judicial independence. To protect the judiciary from interference by the legislature or executive, proper remuneration and working conditions must be guaranteed.
